3D Printing technology for saving human lives still sounds futuristic and few years back it was nearly impossible. But this doctor who once was a part of Ispat EM School of Rourkela has made it possible and became the 1st doctor in India to do such thing. Dr. Gopal who is an Onco-surgeon by profession helped this woman walk again who was fighting with spinal tuberculosis and was under treatment for the same.
For those who don’t know about Spinal Tuberculosis, let us tell you it’s a very deadly disease and if ignored it can paralyze the entire body or even claim a life. Nearly two lakh people in India suffer from tuberculosis of the spine and in most of the cases if it’s not too late then it can be cured through advanced medication and/or spinal surgery. But as this case was a complicated one, Dr Gopal has to remove the damaged vertebrae which is responsible for keeping the skull attached with support to human body.
They made a new titanium vertebra to replace the damaged one by printing it with 3D Printing Technology. The titanium replacement was designed with inputs of designing team from India, USA and Sweden. It took him & his team 10 hours to perform the surgery and it was not an regular one but it was a success.
For the efforts of Dr. Gopal Kumar, the woman, who is a teacher by profession, is recovering fast with newly reconstructed cervical vertebrae and she will be able to lead a risk-free life within two weeks and this successful surgery made a Rourkelite the first one to do such miracle in the country.
