Odisha’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle is no less than others. Even now, thousands of youth from Odisha are serving in the Indian army and we all will agree with this legit demand of BJD MP for establishing new Kalinga regiment in the army.
Recently BJD MP Sasmit Patra reiterated Odisha’s long demand to raise a Kalinga regiment in the troop.
Previously Biju Patnaik has taken up the issue and later on Naveen Patnaik in 2015 demanded the same.
Drawing the attention of Rajya Sabha, Patra said “Kalinga Regiment should be established considering the contribution of the state to the nation’s defence establishment. At the same time, because it’s on the Eastern Seaboard of India, ensuring the protection of eminent establishments like Abdul Kalam Island.”
He also mentioned that Odisha is home to the missile test range centre and Indian Navy’s INS Chilika which is critical to India’s defence.
The demand was not only raised in RS but also in the Loksabha. Dhenkanal MP Mahesh Sahu made the same demand and supported Sasmit Patra.
Currently, there are 250 regiments are active in the Indian army. This includes Jat Regiment, Sikh Regiment, Punjab Regiment, Bihar Regiment, Gorkha Regiment, Rajput Regiment, Madras Regiment, also regiments from Maratha, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir & Naga Regiment.
In Artillery the regiments have been divided into different units with their different types of equipment.
And we hope we’ll be able to see Kalinga Regiments in the Indian Army very soon.
