Dutee Chand, the Olympian and fastest woman in India, has triggered a massive debate on social media after revealing her same-sex relationship with one of her girlfriend.
Dutee Chand is the first Indian sportsperson to come out openly as gay.
While only a few have the courage to swim against the tide to openly say something like that, Dutee has made her choice and even made it clear by saying ‘I’m above 18 and have not committed any crime. And I’ll marry according to Odia tradition.’
As soon as the news surfaced on social media, people started abusing and criticising Dutee. And as expected the regional media rushed to her house to get a ‘breaking news’ for their TRP revealing almost every details.
But more than her critics, it is the celebrities, activists and journalists
who supported Dutee and applauded her move stating she has the right to live her life the way she wants it.
@DuteeChand shines on & off the track. She just made it easier for a whole lot of young girls to feel more okay with their sexuality. > Massive respect for her as she speaks about her relationship to IE, at the same time refrains from naming her partner, as it would create undue attention.👏👏
> Odia media outlets go one step further and reveal the details. Shameless bunch 👎👎
A few years back, she successfully moved the Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) rules on hyperandrogenism, which put a limit on testosterone levels of women competing in track and field events.
The rules were withdrawn in 2018 and that same year Chand won two silver medals at the Asian Games. Her 100m silver was India’s first at the Asiad in 32 years, while her 200m silver was the country’s first in 16.
The sprinter said the Supreme Court judgement on the issue gave her the courage to go public.
