So is the original edifice in danger of being obliviated?
The question is so expected in recent times. Odisha is known for its cultural heritage sculptures and architecture since a long time. Konark sun temple also popularly known as “Black Pagoda” is one of the prime reasons why Odisha’s rich cultural heritage is still alive.
The temple was built to dedicate Lord Surya(Sun) by King Narasimhadeva in 13th century. The temple has a appearance of a high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Also it is a major pilgrimage site for all the Hindus and also is one of the tourist spots which attracts a lot of people. Konark has been a solid and classic illustration of Odisha’s architecture.
Despite of all the amazing things of the temple it is in ruins now. The main cause of destruction of the temple is a ambiguous topic. It is speculated that the temple has been destructed deliberately. Anyway, to make a compensation the Odisha government got a proposal for constructing a replica of the Sun temple.
“We have received a proposal for construction of a Sun Temple like the structure at Konark from eminent stone sculptor, Raghunath Mohapatra”, tourism and culture minister Maheswar Mohanty said.
Such a proposal was earlier made when Indira Gandhi was the PM but it got anulled due to the Indo-Pak war in 1971.Articulating that the proposal was in the preliminary stage, he said the government would decide whether a structure of same size could be built.
According to Mohapatra, about 17 acres of land was identified near Konark for the purpose. If the state government sanctions fund then sculptors would construct a new Sun Temple, Mohapatra said (source DNA).
Making a replica of the Sun temple is something very amazing to hear. Lets just assume it gets implemented soon. I would like you to share your opinions and suggestions on this issue.
